STRUCTURE OF THE TIMBER SECTOR IN ACRE STATE, 1996-2002

Abstract
This article addresses the timber sector in the State of Acre, Brazil. It analyzed the structure of local sawtimber market, in the period 1996-2002. The method used approached the degrees of concentration and barriers to the entry of new firms into this market. The results revealed that: (1) The studied market presents a moderate concentration on the sawtimber production and may be considered as an oligopoly and (2) Shortage of man-power and the existence of an excessive bureaucracy were the main barriers, in the years 1996 and 2002, to the entry of new sawmills in Acre.
