INSIGHTS INTO GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND WOOD QUALITY OF JUVENILE Corymbia spp. FOR METALLURGICAL CHARCOAL PRODUCTION

Abstract
Background: The world steel industry presents a high demand for the search for species that provide gains in charcoal quality due to its high cost for steel. The objective of the article is to identify and quantify the gains in the use of Corymbia wood for charcoal production in relation to Eucalyptus, and also the influence of dendrometric characteristics, wood, and charcoal in the differentiation of the genus.
Results: The Corymbia clones had less height growth than Eucalyptus, wood on average 20% denser and 44% less heartwood, and the charcoal had, on average, 2% more gravimetric yield, 15% more density, and 8% more mechanical resistance than Eucalyptus charcoal. The basic density is the variable of greatest influence for differentiation between the genus and hybrids of C. torelliana x C. citriodora.
Conclusions: The clones of Corymbia had a similar mass of charcoal per hectare to E. grandis x E. urophylla, and thus, favor the choice of the genus Corymbia.
