DIAGNOSTIC OF THE METALLURGICAL INDUSTRY IN MINAS GERAIS

Abstract
This work presented a diagnostic of the metallurgical industry in the Minas Gerais for subsidizing the commercialization of charcoal. The data were collected through questionnaires addressed to the metallurgical companies of Minas Gerais and of literature revision. The results showed that the metallurgical companies are installed close to the iron ore mines and in places with infrastructure for delivering and transporting the production; Sete Lagoas is the bigger producer of pig-iron of Minas Gerais; the metallurgical companies of the state are located in urban areas; the state of Minas Gerais concentrate a large number of blast furnaces used for charcoal production in the country; they are all producers of charcoal, but most of the used charcoal is bought in the market; they prefer to use charcoal with r density superior to 240 kilograms per cubic meter; charcoal humidity lower than 8%; average granulometry around 40 millimeters; low granulometry charcoal between 10 and 17%; ashes content between 1,0 and 2.0%; fixed carbon between 75 and 80%; mdc (a cubic meter of charcoal) as the unit for charcoal commercialization; most of the purchased charcoal come from Minas Gerais state; forest foment is the main mechanism of financing charcoal production and the telephone as main information source; and the lack of commitment with the market is the main risk involved in the charcoal supply.
